Sports :: College Football – If You Thought SEC Was the Toughest NCAA Conference, Think Again

The facts and statistics say otherwise.

Another interesting fact of note is this: Since the NCAA established the Division 1A and 1AA separation in 1978, only 5 Division 1A schools have not played a Division 1AA school: Washington, Southern California, UCLA, Michigan State and Notre Dame. Turns out that I am right.

It is the same reason why Hawaii is unbeaten at 10-0, having defeated two 1AA schools in fattening up its impressive win record while racking up the 153rd toughest schedule against the other 119 Division 1A schools.

Ranked 11th among Division 1A conferences is Conference USA at 58.88. 5, so 3 of Top 5 teams in strength of schedule are from the Pac 10.

I read other factors into his mathematical formula for deciding which conference is the toughest (best) conference.

Copyright © 2007 Ed Bagley

If you are wondering, the team that has played the toughest schedule during the first 12 weeks of the 2007 college football season is the Washington Huskies, and that is why they are ranked No. Three 1AA conferences are then rated above the last 1A conference–the Sun Belt–at 58.26.

Sagarin rates all of the 242 individual 1A and 1AA teams and then combines them among conferences to arrive at these figures.

When I add up the strength of schedule for the 12 SEC teams I get an average of 30 compared to an average strength of schedule of 14 for the Pac 10. Again 3 of the 5 teams come from the Pac 10.

For the record, Nebraska is No. 1 among the 242 Division 1A and 1AA schools.

The SEC already has 7 of its 12 teams with 7 or more wins and bowl eligible by NCCA standards, and now you know one of the reasons why.

The “tough” SEC played exactly 10 Division 1AA opponents this season, more than any other conference in the country. 4 and Colorado No. 2, Stanford No. 3, California No. By comparison, the Big 12 played 10, the ACC and Big Ten played 7 games, the Big East 6, and the Pac 10 only 2.

There is so much buzz and hype about the Southeast Conference–better known as the SEC–you would think there are no other NCAA football conferences that can compare.

Knowing that the SEC is legion for scheduling Division 1AA teams in its non-conference schedule, I suspect that the SEC’s strength of schedule (the quality of its opponents) may not be as strong. Who plays the tougher schedule between the top two dogs? It is easily the Pac 10.

Even Jeff Sagarin in his Sagarin Ratings lists the SEC as the top conference with a central mean (that is Sagarin math talk) of 79.89 with the Pacific 10–better known as the Pac 10–second at 79.19. On a scale of 100 the difference is 70/100ths of 1, or close enough to not make a difference in my mind.. Sometimes a 1AA school can beat a 1A school (like Appalachian State beating Michigan at home 34-32), not because they are necessarily better but because the 1A school did not take them seriously.

Please, do not give me this garbage about the SEC playing the toughest schedule more

Richard Gere, ‘Arbitrage’ Star, On His Sporty Past

His gymnast past impressed more than just us — his 12-year-old son, while watching the Olympics with his dad, was shocked to find out Gere used to pull off the same feats as the guys on TV.

We knew Richard Gere had a whole life before his star-making role in “American Gigolo,” but we didn’t know it involved a pommel horse.

“There’s a picture of me [at home] having just done a dismount — I was actually looking pretty good,” Gere said. It’s not his first time working in food services. “He was very impressed that his dad had been a gymnast.”

Gere has since followed other pursuits; while he’s better known for acting, Gere and his wife also run a Relais and Chateaux, a boutique hotel and restaurant. To hear more about Gere’s first job, watch the video above.

Nevada sports betting could be a $5 billion industry

The Westgate recently poured more than $12 million into the installation of state-of-the-art video boards and a renovated book, and Station Casinos spent millions on new video boards at Red Rock Resort.

Advances in technology have helped the state catch up. But Nevada is gaining ground and significance, and a handle approaching $5 billion (with a win percentage in the 5.5 range) is no small thing to bookmakers and casino operators.

“Every single big event has gone up, with record-breaking handles every year,” said Matthew Holt, vice president of CG Technology sports books. “The world is so (bleeped) up, this is a great relief for three hours.”. CG Technology and William Hill sports books led the way with mobile phone apps that changed the game when introduced five years ago.

“I’ve seen from studies around the world that the mobile app builds business, there’s no question about it,” said Michael “Roxy” Roxborough, an oddsmaker who founded and operated Las Vegas Sports Consultants from 1982 to 1999. You see them drinking Coronas all day,” Vaccaro said. CG Technology executives lobbied lawmakers and worked with the Gaming Control Board to get the bill passed, and the entity concept is expected to flourish for football season in the fall.

Vaccaro has seen almost everything there is to see during four decades as a Las Vegas bookmaker. MGM Resorts, one of the last to make an impression on the market, is set to roll out a phone app later this month. “That made everyone else get an app, too, because they wanted to be competitive.”

Kornegay added, “Just the popularity of sports betting, the entertainment value is second to none.”

Mobile phone apps and increased mainstream media coverage of sports betting are two major parts of the equation.

Las Vegas Review-Journal sports betting columnist Matt Youmans can be reached at myoumans@reviewjournal.com or 702-387-2907. It’s growing and growing and growing, and it’s going to get bigger.”

“People started to bet more because they could bet on their phone,” Holt said. 19, and it has boosted the book’s handle instead of cannibalizing counter business.

“We have a pretty sports-passionate culture,” Lawton said.

“You go to these places for the Super Bowl and Final Four,” Roxborough said, “and it’s a very skewed demographic for people in their 20s.”

“The way things are trending, it’s possible,” Michael Lawton, senior research analyst for the Gaming Control Board, said of the $5 billion figure. But that trend has reversed. It topped $3 billion for the first time in 2012, escalated to $4.2 billion last year and is projected to approach $5 billion in 2016.

Mobile apps, mainstream and social media interest, the expansion of in-game and proposition wagering, fantasy sports’ popularity, Las Vegas book upgrades, laws that caused a slight shift away from offshore wagering, and various economic and societal factors are creating a perfect storm surge for legal sports wagering in Nevada.

“The mobile app is just so popular,” Westgate sports book director Jay Kornegay said “The counter handle has not suffered, either.”

Bookmakers all over the city are getting noticeably more aggressive in beefing up betting menus — even on baseball, golf, hockey and mixed martial arts — to create a more competitive market. each year. Even without it, book director Jay Rood said, “We’re ahead of last year on handle by 5 or 6 percent, so it continues to be strong.”

In the late 1970s, as Jimmy Vaccaro tells the story, there were times when ticket writers in Strip sports books would fall asleep behind the counter because there was so little action. “There is more access to everything, and I think the mobile app is the catalyst.”

“There are more women than I’ve ever seen, and they know the money line is different from the point spread. The Westgate unveiled a phone app Jan. on ESPN Radio (1100 AM). College basketball was a spectacular draw, too, with the 67-game NCAA Tournament pulling in an estimated $200 million in March and April. “It’s a way for people outside of the state to get involved.”

Make no mistake, offshore books such as Pinnacle Sports in Curacao and BetCRIS in Costa Rica are still doing business on American soil, but the passage and enforcement of federal online anti-gambling laws have made it more difficult for the Average Joe to wager with a credit card in recent years. And that was Super Bowl week.

“You are seeing a majority of locals betting on phone apps, and they come to your casino to watch the games. and Manny Pacquiao generated an estimated handle of $80 million in the state.

“In the long run, it could revolutionize sports betting in the state,” Holt said. Still, he was blown away in February, and then blown away again in March.

Offshore and underground bookmakers still dominate the action, with an estimated $400 billion bet illegally on sports in the U.S. It adds up to free advertising.

Last summer, Senate Bill 443 was signed into a law, authorizing business entities in Nevada to place wagers on behalf of investors from around the world. A month after the Super Bowl brought a crush of customers, the first four days of the NCAA Tournament did the same.

At the South Point, Vaccaro said, around 100 customers signed up for the mobile app during the NCAA Tournament, and the book’s tournament handle was up about $1.2 million over 2015.

In the late 1990s, Roxborough said, casinos were plotting to downsize sports books. “On a macro level, the sports betting industry in Nevada never has been stronger. Follow on Twitter: @mattyoumans247

He’s not exaggerating, either. He co-hosts “The Las Vegas Sportsline” weekdays at 2 p.m. State gaming laws are being loosened to help pump up the handle, with entity betting being one progressive example.

On many days, Vaccaro said, 40 percent of what is wagered with the South Point comes in on phone accounts. The Nevada handle of $2.4 billion in 1995 remained flat for more than a decade more

Surviving Las Vegas. Travel Tips for the Las Vegas Strip.

Standing and watching a carousel of orbiting luggage may

not be on the agenda.

Don’t get lost. Unfortunately, current airport security measures have

made the carry-on only practice a bit more daunting. So, wear a

hat. One may plan for weeks and

employ strategic packing methods for short or extended stays, only to be foiled

by the inclusion of liquids, gels and other red flag security items. There are several alternatives. And when you get to your gate, smile at the arriving passengers,

no matter how irritating their exuberance may seem at the time. During summer

months, lightweight synthetics can be quickly hand-washed in the bathroom sink

and dried overnight.

Don’t lose all your money. High-end properties like

Bellagio and the Venetian don’t have them. However, many of these properties traditionally omit a

basic item you might be expecting. You’re the only one who thinks it makes you look foolish.

Smarter packing methods, like bundle-wrapping, can

help you keep everything down to the one carry-on and one personal item allowed.

If that personal item happens to be a backpack or briefcase, that’s just more

room for small items of clothing, or phone and laptop chargers. Pack a

container of your favorite brand, and purchase a $10 coffeemaker at Walgreens.

There are several on the Strip, one conveniently located between the Venetian

and Palazzo. When booking your room, you can also request

a small refrigerator for a nominal fee. Bring your own coffee. Room service is an obvious alternative. Exposed arms and legs

require sunblock or sunscreen, and don’t forget the top of your head. These tips have nothing to do with gambling strategy and offer

no advice on attracting a host or managing a players club account. In fact, you can’t even be

certain of which floor it’s on. You were once

every bit as excited and optimistic as they are. Hydration is important in the desert. What do you do? Instead of panicking, you take

out your phone and look at the photo of the door you took when you arrived.

There’s that room number. Carrying money in Vegas, either on a casino floor or simply

walking down the Strip, requires a bit of forethought. Now get some sleep. Both of these hotels boast about

4,000 rooms, and keeping that many in-room coffeemakers sanitary is simply not

cost-effective. You can also carry items in a small, digital camera case. The added expense is

a small price to pay for being unburdened by extraneous luggage. You may be staying at a hotel with 5,000 rooms, and there

will be no corresponding number printed on your disposable key-card. Dressing appropriately

for each season will also make your stay more enjoyable. It’s 3:30 in the morning, and you’ve been staring at

magical numbers for hours.

Coffee.

The solution is simple. Remember, many Las Vegas cabs still don’t take plastic. With a few unfortunate

exceptions, any room you book on the Strip will be luxurious and spacious and

brimming with amenities. That

number, all five digits and the accompanying hyphen, was scribbled on a piece

of folded cardstock by the desk clerk, and now resides somewhere in your room,

completely ignored. go for

it. Some properties, like Planet Hollywood, feature a simple,

one-cup coffeemaker, but the prepackaged coffee produces a bland and

disappointing cup of Joe.

. Walking

from CityCenter to Treasure Island in the middle of August can result in a

painfully sunburned scalp, even if you still have plenty of hair. On the other

hand, if pillaging the mini-bar is integral to your Vegas experience … If you pack

shoes or boots, don’t waste that interior space. The freshly brewed and

delivered coffee will be better than standard hotel room java, and you’ll pay for

the difference. The aforementioned Strip is home to the majority of the

world’s largest hotels, totaling more than 67,000 rooms. This is

about the day-to-day minutiae of travel–tips for rising, shining and keeping

your cool in a city that never blinks.

Stay cool. If you aren’t too

picky about brand loyalty, just buy what you need when you arrive, and discard

the unused portions.

You can reduce the amount of space allocated for clothing by

taking advantage of the laundry service at the your hotel. Instead of purchasing smaller versions

of these toiletries and dutifully filling a zip-top bag, simply wait until you

arrive in Vegas, and buy even smaller versions. While you’re purchasing that coffeemaker, take the

opportunity to procure bottled water and snacks. The coffeemaker. And don’t

forget the filters.

Pack your bags. A casino is no place for a handbag

either, and heightened awareness should be maintained when carrying one

anywhere in Vegas. Stocking this with a variety of

consumables will also keep you away from more pricey offerings. A small Sling Bag or Travel

Shoulder Bag that hugs the body is a safer option. If you don’t know what to do with the machine once your trip is

over, just remember the cost, and you’ll figure it out. A wallet in your back

pocket is just begging for a new home. When arriving at McCarran Airport, many of us like to hit

the tarmac running. Hang onto enough to tip housekeeping and pay for a cab to

the airport. And with any luck, you will be

again. You may have even consumed a few alcoholic beverages

… Fill them with anything that will

fit. Tiny toothpaste and other

Lilliputian items are all for sale in every hotel gift shop.

Money in your pocket. This additional purchase may

stop you from indulging in the $12 bag of chips and overpriced beverages

lurking in your in-room mini-bar. There are

still ways to beat the system, however. You don’t

want to get stranded, and it’s too far to walk. This can be clipped to a belt, freeing up

your hands and pockets. Although, it’s not a good idea to keep your money in

there, as these cases are too easily detached.

Negative Effects of Gambling

The decision to gamble money is based on three parameters namely; how much to bet, the predictability of the event, and the conditions agreed upon, between the gamblers. Over time, it becomes a habit, and eventually an obsession that can’t be overcome. Their mental state can even lead to suicidal tendencies.

? Substances of abuse are served at casinos and in pubs and clubs, thus increasing the likelihood of gamblers consuming them. On giving a serious consideration to the negative effects of gambling, we realize that it is best avoided.

Gambling = Thoughtless Expenditure + Waste of Time

? Over time, the practice of gambling starts becoming a habit and begins to have damaging effects at psychological, physical, and social levels. Thus, gambling practices cause a huge financial burden on the families of the affected and on the society at large.

Mental and physical health problems, financial issues, and conflicts in the family are among the common negative effects of gambling. A recreational activity is supposed to be refreshing and relaxing, but something like gambling is contrary to the very purpose of recreation. In spite of the losses incurred, they continue betting. They engage in gambling activities at the cost of their time with family and friends. The effect is similar to that of having a drug or a drink, which is why gambling changes one’s mental state and mood.

? Gambling can lead to criminal activities. Sports betting and arbitrage betting are the other types. The National Council of Problem Gambling (NCPG) describes this type of gambling behavior as problem gambling.

? Addiction to gambling has been linked with substance abuse. Addiction to gambling, coupled with substance abuse can make the gamblers physically abusive towards their family. The addiction robs a gambler of all the productive time and leads to loss of efficiency at work. When they lose the money they had risked, they further gamble to recover the lost amount and it becomes a vicious circle even they can’t escape from.

? Similar to how an individual keeps consuming substances like drugs or alcohol to experience an altered mental state, he continues to gamble. Because of this, they land in worse situations and take the wrong decisions in life.

? Gambling has proven to be addictive. Thus, gambling can have a grave economic impact which is difficult to reverse.

? Gamblers often exhibit mood swings and a strangely secretive behavior. ? Research has shown that gambling can lead to harmful behavior in people. Card games, coin tossing, and dice-based games are some non-casino based forms of gambling. Forget satisfaction or peace, it is not even refreshing in the real sense. Due to lost mental peace, they may ill-treat their spouse and children. The greed never ends and they keep betting more and more. It causes a decline in his/her work performance, thus hampering his career.

? Apart from absence at work and drop in efficiency, a common observation is that gamblers tend to steal money and engage in fraudulent behavior to recover from financial losses incurred when gambling, or to get more money to bet.

Initially, one looks at gambling as a way to run away from life’s problems, or from stress, anger, and loneliness. According to the National Research Council, 10 to 17% of the children of problem gamblers have been abused and so have 25 to 50% of the partners of problems gamblers.

Compulsive gambling leads to bankruptcy

? Additionally, rehabilitation and public assistance systems are taxed.

? The costs of treating compulsive gamblers are huge. The addiction leads people to continue with gambling irrespective of whether they earn or lose in the deal. The stress of risking huge amounts of money or the frustration after losing it can increase the tendency of abuse in gamblers. Six to eight million people in America are estimated to have a gambling problem.

? The stress from gambling may lead to health issues like ulcers, stomach problems, muscle pains, headaches, and problems with sleep.

? Children of parents who are problem gamblers or gambling addicts tend to feel abandoned and angry, further increasing stress and leading to strained family relations.. Their debt keeps building and it may reach an amount that exceeds their capacity to repay.

Games offered in casinos, table games like poker, Red Dog, and Blackjack, as also electronic games like Slot Machine and Video Poker are some of the common types of gambling. The addiction gets on to the gamblers to such an extent that they fail to think wisely before acting. The addiction has negative effects on one’s physical and mental health and it proves to be detrimental to one’s social, personal, and professional life. Some take to substance abuse to supplement the high they get from winning huge sums while gambling. This proves to be detrimental to their social and family life. The two go hand in hand. Betting is a mentally taxing activity, and as one goes on risking more and more money, anxiety starts building.

? According to a research by NCPG, 76 percent of problem gamblers are likely to have a major depressive disorder.

? People who fall prey to gambling tend to remain away from their families and waste money on other bad practices. It only leads to a thoughtless expenditure of money and valuables.

? Gambling at the cost of one’s job results in a decline in the quality of his professional life. It soon becomes a habit that can’t be broken.

? They start borrowing money and take secret loans. It can drag you into crime, gambling isn’t fun.

? People continue gambling with the greed of winning money. Rehabilitating the gambling addicts needs money and time, and the process is not very easy. In the following sections of this Buzzle article, we discuss the negative effects of gambling on the individual and society.

? As gambling leads to increased criminal activities, in a way, gamblers add to the burden on prisons and the legal system.

New tax angles for gamblers | Reuters

If you win a bunch of money, but aren’t a pro, you can only deduct your losses up to the amount that they zero out your winnings. The good news for people who field their own fantasy football, basketball or baseball teams is this: It’s usually legal to do so. The Justice Department cleared the way for states to start legalizing online poker and other online betting games. Here’s how: You’re allowed to take as much in gambling losses (the actual amount you bet and lose) as you won. And they appear in different places on your tax return, so anyone who doesn’t itemize their deductions will lose out. It’s very hard to prove that your gambling activity is a business. tax court disallowed the claim of a taxpayer who spent much of his spare time playing the slots, winning $25,534 in the process. WASHINGTON In the waning days of 2011, the federal government has handed gamblers two gifts. “Gambling winnings are always taxable income,” the IRS notes. The IRS has a checklist of behaviors that it looks at to decide if something’s a business, and having fun is on it. The bar is higher for a professional gambler than it is for a professional painter, babysitter, dogwalker or eBay merchant, Fox suggests. If you really enjoy gambling and have other income coming in, and don’t keep good records, you’re probably just going to be considered a recreational gambler, even if you recreate a lot, says Fox.

– The fantasy leagues are still operating in the grey. Then you can also deduct your expenses, such as travel costs, tournament fees and the like. That includes the $250 you get if you call the final four right in your office NCAA pool, and the amount you win when the players in your fantasy football team have a good week.

The main limitation, from Fox’s point of view, is that the IRS distinguishes between recreational and professional gamblers — and only pros can take lucrative tax losses for their expenses. You still have to take the income as taxable, but you’ll lose the deductions.

“The tax code is very very very… The law, which regulates online gambling — the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006 — specifically carves out fantasy leagues as a protected activity. Some fantasy players are getting 1099 forms listing their winnings. But whether the people who spend money on those ‘opportunities’ can actually cash in on the tax breaks that might be associated with them is another question.. Of course Nevada’s kind to those who play (or work) at gambling, so living in Las Vegas instead of traveling there may always be an option. “You have to prove it’s your livelihood, and that’s hard to see.”

– You can win, but you can’t hide. As recently as July of this year, the U.S. And only the pros can take tax losses for their expenses.

– Pros get big write-offs. Some states disallow gambling losses, or subject them to their state’s alternative minimum tax rules. Fox is an enrolled agent — a special class of tax preparer that qualifies him to represent clients before the Internal Revenue Service.

Fox and other analysts do believe that the administration’s new position will eventually lead to many more legal games and gambling opportunities. But Florida has outlawed fantasy leagues. At least you’ll cut down on travel expenses.

– Hobbyist gamblers don’t get the same breaks. And the Internal Revenue Service agreed to a tax court decision that will allow professional gamblers to take big tax losses.

– Of course, there’s a catch. If you are deemed a professional gambler, you can deduct more than you make, producing losses that can reduce your tax bill significantly. But the tax court agreed with the IRS’s claim that he wasn’t really running a gambling business, largely because he had a day job as an X-ray technician that supported him, and because he wasn’t running his gambling business in a businesslike manner. He claimed betting losses of that amount plus expenses of $15,455. And whether they are businesses is a whole other question that doesn’t seem to have been tested. “Maybe five years from now, you’re going to see a number of new games online; many of them have yet to be invented,” said Michael Pollock, managing director of Spectrum Gaming Group, a research and consulting firm.

Does that mean you can now write off all those Knicks games and bar nights you and your fantasy league buddies attend? What about the Vegas sprees that support your habit? Sorry, not so much.

(The Personal Finance column appears weekly, and at additional times as warranted. According to Fox, if you’ve got gambling income and losses, you probably don’t want to be from Hawaii, New York, Ohio, Wisconsin, or a handful of other states, because they have various rules which either disallow gambling deductions or subject them to alternative minimum taxes, or add extra taxes onto gambling businesses. and I could add many more ‘verys’… That enables them to reduce that taxable income by the amount they bet or spent on participating (as long as they don’t create a loss.) But proving you are a professional fantasy sports player? “I seriously doubt it,” says Fox. unfair toward gambling,” says Russell Fox, a Las Vegas tax expert who prepares the returns of poker aficionados, horse bettors, slots players and more. If that results in a gambling business income that is a negative number, you can use that negative number to reduce any other taxable income you may have.

China bitcoin arbitrage ends as traders work around capital controls | Reuters

“All of my clients have plenty of money offshore already,” he said.

Mis-invoicing in China resulted in illicit outflows worth $3.79 trillion between 2000 and 2011, according to a report last year by Global Financial Integrity, a think tank and advocacy group in Washington.

But analysts say the price convergence also reflects the rapid evolution of the bitcoin market, which began with technology enthusiasts but quickly expanded to include those with the financial know-how to evade China’s strict capital controls.

Traders could earn profits by buying bitcoins using dollars on a foreign exchange such as Mt. But the same technique has been used to move funds in the other direction.

He told Reuters that he used RChange, an online currency exchange and payment service based in the Seychelles, to exchange yuan for commercially-operated electronic currencies such as OKPay and EgoPay, which are accepted by several international bitcoin exchanges. An announcement by China’s central bank last week forbidding commercial banks from dealing in bitcoin also contributed to the price decline on BTC China.

Those suspicions centered on the conversion of dollars to yuan in order to profit from appreciation of the Chinese currency. If you’ve got dollars, hurry and do arbitrage,” a user called ‘foxtree’ wrote on Weibo, a Twitter-like micro-blogging platform, on November 19, the day the gap peaked at more than 30 percent.

Wenzhou’s famously tight-knit, business-savvy global diaspora has given rise to the adage “Wherever there’s a market, there are Wenzhou people” and offers Wenzhou investors ready access to foreign currency.

Indeed, unexpectedly strong export growth in November reignited suspicions that official data had been inflated by fake invoicing.

Chinese bitcoin chat rooms buzzed last month as investors noticed that the digital currency as sold on China’s biggest exchange was more expensive, in dollar terms, than bitcoins traded abroad using dollars, creating a tempting arbitrage play.

A Shanghai-based fixed income fund manager dismissed capital controls as a barrier to shifting money around. The most common is falsified trade invoices, which disguise movements of speculative cash as payments for goods and services.

“Certainly a portion of the premium on BTC China was a result of the fact that any coins sold would be in RMB, which isn’t the most portable currency,” said Zennon Kapron, head of Kapronasia, a Hong Kong-based finance and technology consultancy, using an alternate term for the Chinese currency.

. Early this month, Chinese media began reporting that investors from Wenzhou, the east coastal city known for its entrepreneurial and speculative zeal, were piling into bitcoin.

“Insane bitcoin. Gox, reselling them for yuan at the higher price on BTC China, the main local exchange, and finally converting the yuan back to dollars.

In recent days, however, the spread between bitcoins as priced in yuan and those priced in dollars has disappeared. But because such currencies carry hefty charges, this method is only profitable when the bitcoin spread is very wide.

A key driver of the price gap was China’s capital controls, which make it difficult for speculators to swap yuan proceeds from the sale of high-priced Chinese bitcoins into dollars.

Some bitcoin speculators are also likely resorting to other tried-and-true methods for skirting China’s capital controls.

A 27-year-old e-commerce professional from the east coast city of Xiamen, who goes by the screen name ‘King,’ is typical of early-wave amateur punters.

“So if you did trade that market, getting your money back into another currency is more difficult,” he said.

SHANGHAI The price gap between bitcoins trading in Chinese yuan and those sold for other currencies has evaporated in recent days, highlighting the porous nature of China’s capital controls.
